The essence of Job's comfort lies in the little word "my"--"my Redeemer" -- and in the fact that the Redeemer lives.  What is gold to me while it is still in the mine?  It is gold in my possession that will satisfy my needs.  But there is also another word here, which expresses Job's confidence:  "I know."  If I know that Jesus lives for me, then darkness is not dark:  Even the night is light about me.  A living Redeemer, truly mine, is unspeakable joy.

When Jesus was on earth, although a Prince, He walked the path of weariness and service.  So it should be no surprise of His followers, who are princes in His line, should also be looked down upon as inferior and contemptible.  David wanders on the mountains, while Saul reigns in state; Elijah is complaining in the cave, while Jezebel is boasting in the palace.  But when the wheel turns, those who are lowest rise and the highest fall.  Patience, then, believer, eternity will right the wrongs of time.  Simply trust Him!  (Ecclesiates 10:7)

Jesus, bearing His cross went to suffer outside the gate.  The Christian's reason for leaving the camp of the world's sin and religion is not because we should be isolated, we must be "outside the camp," as witness-bearers for the truth.  We must be prepared to walk the straight and narrow path.  We must have bold, unflinching hearts, loving Christ and His truth more than all the world.  Jesus desires  His people to "go...outside the camp" for their own santification.  (Hebrews 13:13)  Will you follow Him?

In Ephesians 2:4 we read what is one of the most cherished and overlooked phrases in the Bible: But God.  It is the hinge of hope for desperate sinners like us.  It is the climax of every gospel presentation.  It leaves behind a wake of grace that ripples into eternity.  We see the glory of God in His rich mercy and great love.  We hang onto the "But God" because in that gospel we trace the echo of grace back to the source.  We find Joy Himself.  And my, what kindness we've been shown by God in Christ Jesus!

Jesus never deserted them, but the disciples fled in fear at the very outset of His sufferings.  This reveals the frailty of all believers if left to themselves; we are but sheep at best and flee when the wolf appears.  They had all been warned of the danger and had promised to die rather than leave their Master; yet they were seized with panic and ran.  What anguise Jesus must have felt as He saw them so faithless! At the cross, we see the hands and feed and side all offering Jesus' "precious blood." It is "precious"
because by it the sins of Christ's people are atoned for; they are redeemed from under the law;
they are reconciled to God, made on with Him.  Through Jesus' precious blood there is not a spot
left on any believer.  The same blood that justifies also gives life to the new nature and leads it to
conquer sin and obey the commands of God.  Are you covered with the "precious blood" of Christ?

Mockery was huge in Jesus' suffering.  Judas mocked Him in the garden; the chief priests and scribe
s laughed at Him; the servants and soldiers brutally insulted Him, Pilater and his guards ridiculed His
royalty; and on the tree all sorts of taunts were hurled at Him.  O that we could set You on a
glorious throne in all men's hearts!  We would ring out Your praises over land and sea until men would
universally adore you just as they once unanimously rejected you.  (Psalm 22:7)

The kisses of an enemy are deceitful.  Let me be on guard when the world puts on a loving face, for
it will, if possible, betray me as id did Jesus, with a kiss.  Let me be wise as a serpent to detect and
avoid the plans of the enemy.  The young man, devoid of wisdom, was led astray by the kiss of a
strange woman: May mmy soul be so strong today that the seduction of the world may have no
effect on me.  Holy Spirit, let me not, a frail son of man, be betrayed with a kiss! (Luke 22:48)  Are you
in danger?

He had spent the night in agony, and so His strength was almost gone, but He was granted neither
food nor rest.  They were eager for His blood and therefore, led Him to die.  Beloved, can you see the
cross on His shoulders, does it represent your sin?  Have you laid your hand upon His head, confessed
your sin, and trusted in Him? (John 19:16-17)

It was never God's plan that His people should be untested.  Trials are the royal insignia marking the
King's vessels of honor.  Even through trouble we have the comfort of knowing that Jesus walked it
before us.  We have His presence to cheer us on, His grace to support us and His example to teach
us how to endure; and when we reach "the kingdom", it will be more that worth the "tribulations" we
have faced. (Acts 14:22)  Jesus is BETTER than anything this world has to offer!!
